Ways to Work

We offer fair-interest vehicle loans for individuals with poor or no credit. Our loans are based on the character of the applicant and the affordability of the payment. In addition to loan assistance and through our partnership with HumanKind, our participants receive additional supportive services including financial literacy training, life skills, and credit education. The Ways to Work program helps individuals move towards greater financial stability and career advancement opportunities.

Eligibility Guidelines

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a valid Virginia Driver’s License
  • Live or Work in our service area:
    • Greater Lynchburg Area – Lynchburg City and the following counties: Campbell, Amherst, Appomattox, and Bedford.
    • Greater Richmond Area – Richmond City and the following counties: Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, and Charles City, and Tri-cities (Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Hopewell, and portions of adjoining counties of Chesterfield and Dinwiddie).
    • Greater Roanoke Area – Roanoke City, Roanoke County (including Salem, Vinton, Cave Springs, and Garden City), and Botetourt County
  • Be currently employed with a work history of at least 6 months of continuous employment at their current job working a minimum of 30 hours per week that is verifiable prior to loan application (hours may be totaled if the applicant has 2 employers).
    • Applicants that have been on their current job for 60 days may qualify if their gap in employment history did not exceed 1 week.

  • Not preparing to file or currently in bankruptcy
  • Have the ability to repay the loan and pay all out-of-pocket fees
  • Applicants must have lived at their current residence in one of the areas mentioned above for at least the past six months prior to loan application, OR, have worked in the service area for one year or more.
  • May not have been a WTW or HumanKind Lending program participant that has defaulted on a loan. However, if a previous client repays the defaulted loan in full and five years have lapsed since the original default, the previous client is eligible to apply again.

Free Classes and Events

The benefits of using the program aren’t just limited to getting an affordable loan for reliable transportation, through our partnerships we also work to increase financial knowledge. This includes financial education course which teaches financial concepts in real world terms. We also help each participant develop a budget and set in place a spending plan.

Auto Loans

Our vehicle loan program helps working individuals with challenging credit histories obtain financing for
reliable transportation.

FAQ

  1.  Complete an inquiry form
  2.  A HumanKind Lending Loan Coordinator will contact you to go over the intake form.
  3.  If the criteria set forth above are met (eligibility requirements), an application will be provided.
  4.  After the application is received, an interview will be conducted with you and a loan coordinator.
  5.  Your credit report will be pulled and all the information provided will be sent for review.
  6.  The loan request will then go to underwriting through a character-based approval process
  7. After the loan has been approved, you and your loan coordinator will work together to make sure that the vehicle you want to purchase meets all of the program requirements regarding the type of vehicle, mileage, year, value, and passes the Mechanic’s Checklist
  8.  Once the vehicle is cleared for purchase, you and the loan coordinator will complete the loan closing paperwork for your new vehicle, register the vehicle with the DMV and your insurance company, and have the immobilizer installed on the vehicle.
  9.  If, at any point during the loan process, you do not qualify for the loan the HumanKind Lending staff will explain why, and if applicable, refer you to other available services or resources.
